The fear of wearing a bathing suit is a common struggle, often fuelled by body shame and societal pressures. Here are a few things you can do to feel more comfortable in a bathing suit this summer.
1. Embrace Self-Love
Shift your mindset from self-criticism to self-love. Sure, your body may not be as fit as other people on the beach but what about all the great things your body does for you? Maybe some of the incredibly fit people have bodies that produce poor behaviours in other areas of life in which your body produces good behaviours. Focus on the great things your body does for you and fill yourself with gratitude.
2. Be Realistic
Negative thoughts about your body often stem from unrealistic societal standards. Social media plays a role in how we arrive at our mental construct of what the “average body” looks like. The photoshopped perfection we are bombarded with on social media is not real and if we are not careful, we will lose touch with this fact.
3. Take Gradual Steps
If wearing a bathing suit in public feels overwhelming, start small. Begin by wearing it at home or in a private space. Gradually expose yourself to more public settings, such as a quiet pool or a secluded beach. The more you expose yourself in this way the more you will realize that people are focused on their own lives, not on judging you. Once you begin to see that worrying about how you look to others is a little arrogant (arrogant because you are not that important that everyone is focused on you) it is easier to live your life as a background character instead of thinking that you are the star in everyone else’s play.
4. Practice Visualization
Visualization is a powerful tool for building confidence. Close your eyes and imagine yourself at the beach or pool, feeling relaxed and happy in your bathing suit. Visualize yourself enjoying the water, the sun, and the company of friends or family. This mental rehearsal can reduce anxiety and help you feel more comfortable when the time comes. This is because your mind does not know the difference between something you vividly imagine and something that has actually occurred.
