Supporting Your Child's University/College Journey: NLP-Based Advice for Parents

Updated: Jul 4

As your child prepares to embark on their university journey, it's a time of excitement and change for the whole family. As a parent, you want to support them in every way possible. Using Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques, you can effectively guide your child through this transition while fostering their independence and confidence. Here’s some NLP-based advice to help you navigate this new chapter.

1. Communicate Positively

Effective communication is a cornerstone of NLP. Use positive language and active listening when discussing their university/college plans with your child. Encourage open and honest conversations about their goals, fears, and expectations. By validating their feelings and providing reassurance, you create a supportive environment where they feel understood and valued. If you say things like, “You are making a big deal out of nothing…..there is nothing to stress about….once you are there, you will be fine…..,” you are invalidating your child’s emotions and this is unhelpful.

2. Reframe Challenges as Opportunities

Help your child reframe any anxieties or challenges they might face. For instance, instead of viewing a difficult course as a potential failure, you may encourage them to see it as an opportunity to learn and grow.  The most rapid growth comes from stepping outside our comfort zone. This shift in perspective can reduce their anxiety and boost their resilience.

3. Set SMART Goals Together

Encourage your child to set Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound (SMART) goals for their university/college experience. Help them break down these goals into smaller, manageable steps. This approach not only keeps them focused but also allows them to celebrate their progress, fostering a sense of accomplishment. When we do not break a goal down into bite sized pieces, we may focus on the big goal which creates a feeling of overwhelm.

4. Model Resilience and Positivity

Children often model their behaviour on their parents. Demonstrate resilience and a positive attitude in your own life. If you are easily rattled and complain about your life situation, your child will model this behaviour. It is better if they model calmness and solution-based thinking.

5. Create Positive Anchors

In NLP, anchoring involves associating a physical action with a positive emotional state. We know that any emotional state that is in our history can be summoned to the surface in the present.  Goals require the passage of time to achieve but this is not true for our emotional states.  We move from a negative to a positive state instantly simply by changing our thinking. Find something that helps move your child to a positive state.  Maybe a piece of music, a scent or standing in a powerful pose.

6. Visualize Success

Guide your child through visualization exercises. Have them close their eyes and vividly imagine achieving their academic and personal goals. Encourage them to picture the details, emotions, and outcomes associated with their success. This technique can enhance their confidence and motivation.  Make sure that they see themselves in the visualization as though they are watching themselves as an actress in a movie.

7. Encourage Independence and Responsibility

University is a time for your child to grow and become more independent. Encourage them to take responsibility for their decisions and actions. Offer guidance and support, but also give them the space to make their own choices and learn from their experiences.  Taking too much responsibility to ease the burden on your child may create dependency.

8. Practice Mindfulness and Self-Care

Teach your child the importance of mindfulness and self-care. Encourage them to incorporate practices such as meditation, deep breathing, and regular physical activity into their routine. These habits can help them manage stress and maintain their mental well-being.

Conclusion

Supporting your child as they transition to university is a rewarding yet challenging experience. By applying NLP techniques such as positive communication, reframing challenges, setting SMART goals, modelling resilience, creating positive anchors, visualizing success and encouraging independence, you can provide a strong foundation to support the next chapter in his/her life.

Embrace this period of growth with confidence and trust in your child's ability to thrive in their new academic environment.  Create a sense of expectancy that everything is going to work out just fine.

Your child may lack the confidence to jump into this next phase of life with certainty, so it will be important that you hold enough confidence for both of you.
